A group is a collection of people who have a common denominator. The denominator can be anything such as professions, farms, etc. Groups are not part of gedcom.
Each person can belong to multiple groups. A person, for example, can belong to a group for everyone who lived on a particular farm while the person also may belong to a group for a specific profession. It is up to the individual researcher what you want to use the groups for.
When you import people they are automatically placed in a separate
group which makes it easy to separate them.
