Import

Gets genealogy data from a GEDCOM file or an XML file into family register that is active or to a new family register. If you make the import into an active register, it is possible to first check if there are any duplicates with Duplicate control.
Make it a habit to make a backup before you make major changes in your family register.

To load a register from gedcom

  1. Activate any of the above command. The file chooser opens.
  2. Go to the directory where your gedcom file with the extension ".ged" is.
  3. Choose whether to import to a new registry or to the active one.
  4. If you import to an active registry, you can do a duplicate check to make sure no duplicates are formed.
  5. Press Import.

Each gedcom import is automatically added as a group in which the time of import is part of the name of the group. You can easily sort out those people you just imported if you need to by selecting the group in Groups of individual.

Genney supports major part of the gedcom standard but there are some exceptions. Many genealogy programs also export information that is outside the standard which can make that information not accepted by Genney.

To retrieve a family file from xml

  1. Activate with any of the above command. The file browser opens.
  2. Go to the directory where the xml file with the extension ".xml" is located.
  3. Validate the file to see that it is the right type of file.
  4. Select Importer to import to active register.
