Search individual

If you know the name of a person, you will easiest find him or her with Individual search tool. You open the window by any of the above command.

In the window there are two input fields. One where you can search by ID and one where you can search by Name. Search is made directly when you type in one of the boxes. Searching is also done on alternative names and is presented in the list as italics.

You can also search for dates using the current date format. The search is done on both date of birth and date of death.

When searching for name, you have the option to search by first name, last name or part of the name. If you are looking for first or last name, you also have the option to choose whether the search phrase should match exactly or to search for names similar to the phrase. When you are looking for part of the name you will find names that contain the phrase. The search phrase "han" will find both Abraham Johansson and Ingrid Hansen. If you search for first name you will find personal names that begins with the search phrase. Search for last name follow the same rule as for first name.

The search tool is insensitive to capital and small letters. You can also use "wildcards". Percent (%) replaces several letters. "p%r" finds both Per and Peter. Underscore (_) replaces a single letter. "_olf" finds both Volf and Wolf.

Apply restrictions are used as default when changing parents or partners in the biography to limit the search area. Parental and partner criteria are the control values specified under Settings - Control values. For biological parents, the gender is also limited.

To make it easier to get a picture of whether it is the right person, there is a window to the right with additional information on the person that is highlighted in the table of results. Use the up and down arrows on the keyboard to reach adjacent names in the table.
