selected person.
To show or hide biography use one of the above commands.
To save your changes, press Save at the top right
of the tabs or +
| + if biography has focus.
The biography can be viewed both as a fixed window (default), and as a separate window.
You change it in File > Preferences > Biography which also determines whether
Reference number, Private or Changed is to be displayed or not. You can always
open the biography in its own window with command .
When a person is to be saved, a duplicate check is made against name, birth and death data.
If there are duplicates, the duplicates are displayed in a window where you can choose to:
Insert the name as full name with the first name and last name together. If you insert an asterisk (*) after a first name, it is interpreted as the first name and displayed underlined. If you put a first name in quotes ( ") it is interpreted as a nickname. And if you put one word after the last slasch it is interpreted as surname suffix.
It is possible to use asterisk on sevral first name parts, and the usual minus sign interprets the name as a whole word, for example Per-Anders*.
If you want to be able to mark a single namepart, you can divide the name with hyphen (U+2010) or En-dash (U+2013), for example Per‐Anders*.
The hyphen is not supported by all fonts.
The surname is separated with "/" before and after the surname. The division is done automatically when the focus leaves the text box. Example: Hans /Nilsson/.
After you have entered the name once, or if you want to be able to edit the different name parts and/or if you want to use the first name prefixes, use the Edit name button. Maximum 248 characters.
Right click (Mac two finger click) or +
in the name field opens a pop-up menu
where you have quick access to a variety of names divisions.

Here you can select whether a person should be private, ie. you have the option to exclude the person in exports and in print.
There are 7 or 6 tabs depending on whether you choose to display the personal notes as its own tab or not, see Options - biography. On all tabs except the first tab and display mode, a number indicate if tab has contents. If a person, for example belonging to four groups a 4 on the group tab is shown.
